The new Awana year is now here, and your life has suddenly become a lot busier. I know it can be a hectic time, and you need all the help you can get. We have put this resource page together based upon the 'Commander CD' with a variety of information to try to help you plan a little better and also to help you work more efficiently in your clubs.

There are some things I would like you to remember as you go through this year. First and foremost is why you are doing this job. You may be Commander because no one else would (or you missed the meeting and got voted into it!) You may have wanted to serve and thought this was the best way to accomplish that goal. Whatever the reason remember there is one reason why God has you where you are, and that is to reach boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ. Grab onto this vision, and make it your own, and all of your work will never seem to be in vain. Pass it on to your leaders, and remind them of who they are and what they are doing, and your work might just become easier.

Remember you are not alone. There are over 260 other Commanders in Oklahoma who can be a great resource for you. We also have a team of volunteers who are willing to help you in any way they can. My wife and I are also here to give you as much assistance as possible to help you and your club grow. Thanks you for your dedication and all of your hard work.

James Cavanaugh
Awana Missionary to Oklahoma

Help! I’ve been asked to develop ways to protect our children.

At Awana we are often asked for help in protecting children. We are happy to respond to these requests.
We recognize that in helping churches protect children, we are also helping to protect the adults working with
children and the ministry of the church. We believe churches that do not protect children suffer lost ministry
opportunities. Here is a flier you can print out to use for child protection. Awana Child Protection Flier

Awana Missions Opportunities - Adopt a Club:

Thousands of churches overseas see Awana as an extremely effective means for leading kids and families to Jesus Christ. But there are many more that can't afford to start and run clubs. Individuals, churches, clubs and families can meet this critical need through Adopt-a-Club. For just $20 a month, or $240 a year, you can provide 10 or more children with Awana materials that enable them to participate in Awana. Many clubs do this through simply collecting coins on a card that adds up to the support necessary to fund one of these sponsorships. For more information, E-mail: adopt-a-club@awana.org or visit http://www.awana.org/donate/adoptaclub/.

Awana Missions Opportunities - Vision Teams:

Looking for your next church missions trip? How about joining an Awana Vision Team? Awana International will connect your church with a national Awana missionary in the country you desire to visit. Awana will suggest ministry activities for your church to conduct that will bless the national Awana ministry and your church. For the most current list of upcoming trips, please visit visit http://www.awana.org/donate/vision_teams/ or complete the information request form.

Awana Missions Opportunities - Missionary Contacts:

Are you looking for additional missionaries for your clubbers' missionary sections? Of course, Awana missionaries are always available to help, but some sections require information about more than one missionary, and some children want to study a wider variety of missionaries. As we continue to meet missionaries in our travels, we will add contact information here for your use:

    Risley Family Ministries
    Missionaries in Northern Mexico
    PO Box 219
    Sierra Vista, AZ 85636

Coming soon: Karen Carney (currently in language school)
Upon completion will be a missionary in Chiapas, Mexico

    Basic Training:

Basic Training is available for all churches on a first-come, first-serve basis. Simply check the Ministry Calendar to find an available date, and contact us to reserve the time. Regional Basic Trainings will be offered on a quarterly basis once the Ministry Team has grown large enough to cover them. For more information, please contact us at jamesc [at] awana [org] org or (918) 286-3343 / (918) 200-4644.

    Bible Quiz Resources:

Dress Code: Because we will be in church auditoriums, we do have a dress code for Bible Quiz events: Awana uniform with slacks / khakis (or at least knee-length skirts for girls. Ladies, if your girls are wearing skirts, please teach them to sit like a lady as they will be facing the audience. Thanks!) If your church does not use uniforms, dress shirts will be acceptable. Example of Unacceptable dress: Non-uniform T-shirts and flip-flops. Note: We understand that some families are just not able to afford "dress clothes," and we do not want this to be a barrier that would keep kids from participating. However, we also want to teach respect for the worship center. Therefore if your clubbers are able to wear slacks / khakis rather than jeans, please have them to do so. If jeans are worn, please ensure that they are nice jeans - black if possible; limit the number of holes and fraying, etc. As former coaches, we personally used to keep a couple of loaner pairs of clothing for just this type of occasion. You can usually find good items at Goodwill or Salvation Army for little to nothing. If a clubber forgets his/her uniform shirt the day of the event, they will NOT be banned from competing. While we want to impart a reverence to our kids for the sanctuary, it is MUCH more important that we instill the Word of God in their hearts.

In addition to having a coach for each team, each church is required to supply a scorekeeper (this should be someone who is good at math) and one additional worker. Both of these people should be volunteers who are able to stay for the entire event. Coaches, scorekeepers, and other workers positions cannot be filled by the same person. Jobs that the additional worker may be responsible for: Check-in, Judge, Timer, carrying the microphone to the recognized teams during the speed round, Set-up, Clean-Up, etc.

    Commander College:

Commander, How Well Did You Get Trained?

More than anyone in your church, commanders hold the key to a successful Awana ministry. That’s why Commander College gives specialized training to help you make your ministry everything God intended! Through CC 101 and 201, take your leadership and ministry to the next level in raising kids who know, love and serve Christ.

    Grand Prix:

The Awana Grand Prix is a family-oriented affair that allows clubbers to express their ingenuity by creating and racing their own wooden Grand Prix cars while enabling clubs to share God's plan of salvation with clubbers' unsaved family members by attracting them to a fun event involving their child. Many clubs include a special race for parents and leaders caught up in the excitement of crafting their own cars. Grand Prix events usually last about two hours or the equivalent of one club meeting.

To reserve the Oklawana Grand Prix track, please contact James and Paula Cavanaugh...

    Modern Day Joseph:

Our children and youth are ill-equipped for spiritual and moral challenges today – and for leading the home, church and community tomorrow. In fact, many will leave their faith behind after high school. Awana offers a solution. We are calling and equipping parents and churches to work together to raise kids who know, love and serve Christ. Inspired by the life of Joseph from the Old Testament, whose trust in God and character carried him through trials and temptations. [Read more...]

    Helpful Hints:

    • Alternatives for Bring a Friend sections:
The spirit of the section is to teach the kids to invite their friends to church so that they hear the Gospel. There are always going to be some kids who honestly can't bring a friend to club for one reason or another. Therefore, here are some ideas for these kids to complete once all avenues have been exhausted while trying to complete the original requirement:

        • Bring an adult who has never been to club.
        • For each required visitor, invite two friends and have the friends to write a note documenting the invitation, but verifying they couldn't come.
        • Clearly share the Gospel with a friend or family member.
[More ideas from the Awana Forums]

    • Check out the online Handbook Pacing Calendar on the Awana website: http://www.awana.org/powerup/calendar. This helpful tool allows you to set your start and end dates, plus include any dates that you will not be having club in order to determine how many sections a clubber will need to complete each week in order to complete their current handbook in a single club year.

    • Have questions or need ideas? The Oklahoma Missionary and Ministry Team are here to help, but did you know that you can also get answers from leaders from across the country? Check out what's happening on the Awana Forums: http://www2.awana.org/cs/Forums/. Not only can you converse with other Awana leaders, but there are blogs started by various staff members at Awana Headquarters that can be very interesting and from which many times staff members get feedback about various undertakings and ideas for future endeavors.

    • Awana Ideas, Parent Pause, Sparkles, KidsPrint: What do all of these publications have to do with each other? They are all free newsletters published by Awana for your use. Awana Ideas contains tried and true methods of doing all sorts of activities - many of which are submitted by leaders from across the country. Parent Pause, Sparkles, and KidsPrint are all downloadable newsletters that you can print for your clubbers and their families. They have stories and activities for the kids, and there is a place on the last page for you to share any announcements with parents. Sign of for all of these and several other Awana newsletters at http://www2.awana.org/subscriptions/subscribe.html

    • Looking for ways to engage parents? Have you heard of KidMatters? It's a one-minute parenting spot sponsored by Awana on many Christian radio stations. If you do not have it in your area, don't fret - you can also hear them on the Awana website.

    • You have a child that has just flown through his/her handbook, reviewed the material perfectly, and completed the workbook / silver & gold sections. There are still several weeks of club left. What do you do? Awana website to the rescue with more extra credit opportunities!! Log onto ART (Awana Resources and Tools) and go to extra credit! You can also have clubbers complete Truth Scripts or do some peer tutoring.

    • Can't figure out where that award is supposed to be displayed? (Hmmm, let me guess -go to the Awana website??) You got it!!! Sign on to ART (Awana Resources and Tools) and check out the Leader Resources page for your particular club [Cubbies, Sparks, or T&T]. There will be a drop down menu at the top of the page. You can also find clip-art, announcements, and ideas on the Leader Resource page under ART as well.

Ten Standards of Excellence for Awana Children's Clubs:

These are the ten standards of a successful Awana children's club [PDF format]. The characteristics beneath each standard illustrate a well-run club and can serve as the pattern for a church's orientation and evaluation. These standards have been compiled based upon principles contained in Awana training materials.
This page contains resources specifically designed for Oklahoma. The main Awana4u2.org resources page also contains useful resources such as permission slips, line judge rule books, and AwanaGames/Sparks-a-Rama game tips as well as pages devoted to Cubbies, Sparks, Truth & Training and the Teen ministries.
